Founded in 2018 by Nhon Ma, Numerade provides short-form STEM videos explaining equations and experiments and uses an algorithm to recommend videos based on students’ comprehension style. The subscription-based platform focuses on providing asynchronous, contextualized content (as opposed to live tutoring or group tutoring), making it easier to provide high-quality, affordable tutoring at scale. Numerade’s three main products are bootcamp videos for foundational knowledge, step-by-step videos that focus on sequence and building skill, and quizzes that assess retention. In December 2022, the company launched Study Groups that allows students to create and join online study groups with their classmates. Since its founding, Numerade has assisted ~100 million students and is host to a library of more than 1 million videos as of December 2022.
Funding and financials
Numerade raised USD 26 million in a Series A round in July 2021 that valued the company at USD 100 million. The funds will be used to make STEM education available to more students worldwide, democratizing access to high-quality content. The company plans to expand its video library, and further develop its proprietary AI tutor technology. The company also reported ~USD 10 million in annual subscription revenue.
