Shift5 provides operational technology (OT) solutions to protect critical infrastructures such as commercial air, rail and metro, defense, helicopters and UAVs, maritime vessels, heavy vehicles, and satellites and space systems from cyberattacks and operational failures. Founded by members of the US Army Cyber Command and led by a team of cybersecurity experts, the company’s data-driven analytics platform integrates onto existing transportation platforms to continuously monitor critical information for threats. It also maintains the resilience of vehicles and fleets. The company provides cybersecurity solutions such as threat detection, live visibility and alerting, cyber resiliency, predictive maintenance, and vulnerability research for commercial fleet operators and military organizations.

Shift5 protects OT platforms through a three-component solution that includes Intake, Engine, and Gauge Cluster. Shift5 Intake deploys as hardware or software to collect data from existing serial bus protocols on fleet systems to transmit critical vehicle information to cybersecurity teams. Shift5 Engine detects anomalies and provides alerts using advanced statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, and standards-based rules. Shift5 Gauge Cluster uses advanced analytics to visualize critical vehicle information and conducts intrusion detection, incident response, and prevention.

Key customers and partnerships

The company won a multimillion-dollar contract from the US Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) in November 2020 to configure a prototype vehicle security system on army combat vehicles.

Shift5 serves the US Army, US Air Force, US Navy, and several US passenger rail systems.

Funding and financials

In June 2023, Shift5 raised USD 33 million in an extension of its Series B funding round led by Moore Strategic Ventures, for a total USD 83 million raised in the round. The firm planned to use the funds to hire staff, expand into new markets, grow its federal business, and invest in engineering.

The company hit an eight-figure annual recurring revenue (ARR) in its first year of product sales, buoyed by multiple seven-figure deals in 2021. Shift5 also recorded a 200% increase in its employee headcount during 2021.
