Modern Animal is an on-demand veterinary telehealth platform offering unlimited exams, in-app prescription requests, and delivery and virtual care for dog and cat owners. The company has developed its own technological platform and was founded by Steven Eidelman, founder of dog tracking startup Whistle. Modern Animal’s veterinary team is led by Dr. Christie Long, former director of veterinary medicine at PetCo (provider of offline grooming, training, and vet services for pets). For a membership fee of USD 129 per annum (as of March 2022), customers get unlimited appointments and 24/7 virtual support.
Modern Animal’s first physical clinic was opened in April 2020 in Los Angeles, offering vaccines, medical checkups, and advanced procedures that do not require overnight care. The company envisions operating 50 locations throughout the US in five years, allowing it to expand on-site veterinary services. In August 2023, the company planned to expand its network of veterinary clinics to Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Houston, Denver, Phoenix, and Atlanta in the second half of 2024.
Funding and financials
In August 2021, Modern Animal announced raising a combined USD 75.5 million over two funding rounds over the preceding 12 months. This includes USD 35.5 million in Series A funding led by True Ventures and Addition and USD 40 million in Series B funding led by Founders Fund. Both rounds included the participation of all three firms and existing investor Upfront Ventures. The company expects to use the funds toward platform development and expansion.
