FarmSense is a pest management and insect monitoring platform that gives farmers a real-time view of the species and quantity of pests in their fields.
In June 2022, the company launched its real-time pest monitoring and identification device, "FlightSensor," in a limited launch consisting of 1,000 FlightSensor units to select commercial pest advisors, farm managers, and growers in California. FlightSensor uses a patented algorithm and optical sensor technology to detect and classify insects much earlier in the population cycle, providing real-time insect classification and counting from the field and alerting growers.
The company primarily focuses on nut farmers, but its solution can be customized for any crop. Each sensor can cover up to 20 acres, but it may vary depending on the crop type and insects the farmer needs to monitor.
Funding and financials
In August 2023, FarmSense was awarded USD 275,000 in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding, with the potential to expand to up to USD 2 million, to develop an end-to-end digital mosquito surveillance platform for farmers. In October 2023, the company received a USD 750,000 investment as one of two winners of the 2023 Radicle Inclusion Challenge presented by Nutrien. The company intended to use the funds to develop and expand its “FlightSensor'' technology.
As of October 2023, the company had received awards and grants from organizations including Microsoft, Google, the US Department of Defense, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Agriculture, and the National Institutes of Health.
