Bolt Threads: Revolutionizing the fashion industry with mycelium and spider silk

Bolt Threads manufactures vegan spider silk and mycelium-based materials by using a yeast fermentation process to develop isolated silk proteins from proteins inspired by spider silk.
  • Its key product, Mylo, is an alternative leather made from mushroom-based mycelium. Last year, the company partnered with Mycelium Materials Europe (MME) for the commercial production of Mylo.
  • Bolt Threads also formed the Mylo Consortium (includes Adidas, Stella McCartney, Kering, and Lululemon), which made a seven-figure investment in October 2020 to produce Mylo at scale, securing access to a large supply of the material.
  • For its Microsilk product, a spider-silk-based material, the company initially partnered with fashion designer Stella McCartney in 2017 to launch biodegradable dresses. Since Microsilk remains relatively more expensive than traditional silk, the founders are seeking ways to scale up.
Below, we present a detailed company teardown published by our content partner Sacra (May 2022), which takes a deeper look at Bolt Thread’s financials, business model, competitive environment, and market opportunities.
