The following report was prepared and published by our sister platform SPEEDA—February 2024.
Trend Overview
Regenerative Medicine (RM) to Treat the Root Causes of Diseases and Disorders
RM encompasses treatments of tissue, cells, and genes created and engineered to address damaged organs caused by defects, injuries, old age, and diseases. It aims to target the root causes of a disease rather than addressing the symptoms of one.
RM, a field of study expanding since the 1970s, requires sourcing tissue or cells from a patient, usually from the bone marrow. These stem cells are typically placed on a biological or synthetic structure that can take the shape of tissue called a scaffold. It is then immediately implanted in the patient or grown in a lab and implanted later. This report will focus on the three main commercialised regenerative treatments i.e. cell therapy, gene therapy, and tissue engineering.
