Discord: The VoIP and instant messaging platform for gaming communities
Discord is a communication platform dedicated to the esports community. The platform facilitates communication using images, video (including screen sharing), audio, text, and searchable threads, where each community has its server categorized into different channels.
Discord has introduced a limited live-streaming service, currently allowing up to 50 viewers at a time. The company has also developed several automated content moderation features for its platform, which can automatically detect and block messages containing harmful words or phrases before they are posted.
The company’s platform combines text, voice, and video chat capabilities across servers tailored to specific communities and interests. Also, it allows users to customize their profiles, join public and private servers, create their own servers, and use bots to add functionality.
Discord has ~200 million active users (as of April 2024), and it has raised USD 500 million in funding as of September 2024. The company also partnered with Sony in May 2021 to enable cross-platform communication across PSN, mobile, and desktop users.
