Volta Trucks, a developer of fully electric trucks, has unveiled its first operational prototype chassis for its 16-ton electric truck, “Volta Zero.”
The prototype, built using the proposed production specifications, includes a high-voltage battery from Proterra and a compact eAxle supplied by Meritor. The eAxle, which integrates rear axle, electric mortar, and transmission unit, is said to be Europe's first such integration in a commercial vehicle.
The Volta Zero prototype was launched in September last year, and the company plans to have the first batch operational by late 2021, after incorporating the learning outcomes from testing, expected to take place soon. The company aims for mass production to begin by December 2022.
Sweden-based Volta Trucks develops full electric trucks, dubbed “Volta Zero,” predominantly targeting inner-city freight deliveries. The 16-ton trucks are designed ground-up with an operating pure-electric range of 95 miles-125 miles on a single charge. Last month, the company also expanded the product line to include three new models in 7.5-ton, 12-ton, and 19-ton weight categories, in addition to its 16-ton model.
