Nikola Motor Company (Nikola), a developer of heavy-duty battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) trucks, reported its Q2 2021 results today. The company revealed its plans to produce 25–50 electric trucks in 2021, slashing its previous projections by half. The company built 14 pre-production prototype truck units during the quarter (five alpha units and nine beta units).
Nikola also began trial production at its manufacturing facility in Ulm, Germany in June 2021, which started as a joint venture (JV) with the Italian alternative fuel-powered vehicle manufacturer, IVECO. Currently, two Nikola Tre BEV pre-production units are being assembled at the facility, with serial production to begin soon. The company is also developing another facility in Coolidge, Arizona, and building seven trucks, two Nikola Tre BEV pre-production units, and five Tre FCEV alpha units.
During the quarter, the company continued commissioning and validating its first batch of five beta Nikola Tre BEVs and started commissioning and validating the second batch of nine units in Arizona. Validation testing is expected to continue through Q3 and the beginning of Q4 2021. The company is also assembling Nikola Tre FCEV alphas at its two facilities in Germany and Arizona.
In H2 2021, Nikola intends to deliver Nikola Tre BEVs for use on public roads, partner with additional customers and dealers for fleet testing, start building its first commercial hydrogen production facility, and partner with companies for hydrogen infrastructure.
Nikola develops hybrid (battery-electric and hydrogen electric-powered) heavy-duty trucks, as well as energy infrastructure solutions. The company has announced several zero-emissions vehicle design concepts since 2016, including Nikola One, Nikola Two, Nikola Tre, and Nikola Reckless. The company has more than 14,000 pre-orders, but there was no update on pre-orders during the quarter.
