Clearview AI, a developer of facial recognition-based solutions for law enforcement, has announced that it has achieved number one status in one-to-one facial verification and wild photos categories in the facial recognition vendor test (FRVT), conducted by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The one-to-one test includes verification of visa photos, mugshot photos, visaborder photos, and border photos, for which Clearview AI ranked number one in the US and among the top five worldwide out of 650 algorithms evaluated. The company ranked number one in the US and second worldwide in the wild photos category, which is considered to be the most difficult among facial recognition tests.

 <ul><li> Analyst QuickTake: This is reportedly the first time the facial recognition company has submitted its algorithms for the FRVT test, which is considered a controversial move due to claims on accuracy and privacy concerns as it scrapes images from the internet. The company has also faced several allegations (by immigrants rights groups in March , several privacy organizations in May ) and restrictions (banned in Canada in February , and cases ongoing in the UK and Australia). However, the company continues to develop its technology and expand its presence. Even though the company has ranked first in the one-to-one category, it is reported that the most used facial verification technique for law enforcement is the one-to-many category, for which the company has not submitted the algorithm yet. The company has stated that it plans to submit its one-to-many algorithm for tests in the future.</ul>
