General Fusion, a Canadian fusion energy startup, has partnered with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) to build and operate a fusion demonstration plant (FDP) at UKAEA’s Culham Campus in Oxfordshire, UK.
General Fusion is expected to enter into a long-term lease with UKAEA to host the FDP at Culham. The FDP would demonstrate General Fusion’s proprietary Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) technology, paving the way for the company’s subsequent commercial pilot plant. General Fusion is expected to benefit from the cluster of fusion supply chain activities in the UK centered on UKAEA’s globally recognized expertise and presence in the field. The construction of the FDP is expected to begin in 2022 and operations three years later.
Founded in 2002, General Fusion aims to develop utility-scale fusion power using MTF technology. The company believes that MTF, with the aid of modern electronics and advances in plasma physics, provides the most practical path to the commercialization of fusion power. General Fusion expects to commercialize its technology by the 2030s.
