LanzaJet, a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) startup, has been working with the UK government and several industrial partners to build and commission the world’s first commercial-scale ethanol-based Alcohol to Jet (ATJ) production facility in South Wales. LanzaJet and its former parent LanzaTech will jointly build and operate the facility.
The proposed facility will yield around 100 million liters of ATJ Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (ATJ-SPK) to produce around 330 million liters of blended SAF per year. The SAF from the facility will be used by UK-based airlines, including Virgin Atlantic.
LanzaJet develops SAF from low carbon intensity ethanol. The company spun out from LanzaTech, a carbon capture and biofuel startup, in June 2020. The South Wales plant is LanzaJet’s first commercial deployment, following which, it expects to develop multiple follow-on projects in the UK and globally via a licensing model in which customers build, own, and operate facilities that use LanzaJet’s technology.
