LanzaTech converts carbon emissions into plastic bottles

Product updates

 • LanzaTech, a next-generation carbon transformation company, announced the launch of the world’s first polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottle produced from carbon dioxide emissions, which is a portfolio addition to Migros, Switzerland’s largest retailer.

 • LanzaTech’s CarbonSmart Ethanol technology was used in plastic bottles while meeting all food and safety protocols. The bottles contain up to 30% PET obtained from carbon dioxide.

 • Previously in 2020, Migros, along with Mibelle, launched a range of liquid cleaning products by utilizing LanzaTech’s sustainable ethanol technology.

Analyst QuickTake: The PET bottle is the latest of several commercialization pathways explored by LanzaTech in recent times. Previously, LanzaTech had partnered with L’Oreal, Unilever, and Coty to convert carbon dioxide into polyethylene bottles, laundry capsules, and perfumes, respectively. LanzaTech has also partnered with BASF to develop n-octanol and Twelve to develop polypropylene from carbon emissions, in addition to its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) applications.
