Melodea, an Israeli company producing bio-based coatings for industrial application, has entered the packaging industry with plant-based coating solutions “MelOx” and “Melodea VBcoat” to replace plastics and aluminum coatings used to protect packages.

The MelOx coating protects packages from oxygen, oil, and grease, while the Melodea VBcoat is a water vapor barrier coating. The latter can be applied on top of the oxygen barrier to give higher protection for the packaging. 

The packaging coating solutions use Melodea’s proprietary technology to extract cellulose nanocrystals from wood pulp obtained from the industrial forests. The coating is recyclable, compostable, and non-toxic. It can be applied on surfaces such as paper, paperboard, bio-plastic, and plastic. Melodea targets packaging manufacturers, goods manufacturers, and food companies for this solution.
