Gousto, a London-based meal kit delivery startup, reported revenue growth of 67% YoY to GBP 315 million (~USD 393.8 million) in FY2021. The company reported that it had sold 90 million+ meals in 2021 compared to 53 million meals the previous year. EBITDA was up 10% YoY to GBP 20 million (~USD 25 million) in FY2021, while net cash from operations reported growth of 136% YoY to GBP 37 million (~USD 46.3 million).

The company further stated that the success of 2021 was attributable to a number of initiatives that it managed to carry out over the past year. This was 1) increasing the headcount by ~40% to 1,625 by the end of 2021; 2) significant investment to improve automation in its production facility based in Cheshire, expected to be operational in 2022; and 3) having raised capital early this year to execute its growth strategy.

Additionally, Gousto aims to reduce its carbon footprint in terms of food wastage and carbon emission per meal consumed. As a result, the company joined the “The UK Plastics Pact,'' a collaborative initiative that aims for 100% reusable, recyclable, and compostable plastic by 2025. As a result, in 2021, the company reported that 58% of Gousto own-brand stock-keeping units were made from recyclable packaging and that 100% of Gousto boxes are made from recycled material. Additionally, the company partnered with Xampla, a natural packaging expert, to create edible packaging, made from pea protein, claimed to be the world’s first, considered to be an alternative to plastic sachets.
