Delivery Hero's online food delivery division, Foodora, is launching a “Doora” sidewalk delivery robot in a pilot program for home deliveries in Stockholm, with initial tests taking place in Stureplan square.
The robots are supplied by the Italian startup Yape and the program aims to deliver up to 44 lbs payloads at a maximum speed of 3.7 mph.
The Swedish telecommunications company Tele2, has also partnered with Foodora to provide a 5G network to allow the droids to better perceive its surroundings and send information to Foodora in real-time.
Yape is a unit of the Italian tech-focused investment organization e-Novia. It offers delivery robots equipped with sensors, lasers, and video cameras. The company has commercial partnerships with food delivery, retail, and e-commerce companies in Europe and the US to make deliveries at airports. Yape also conducted delivery trials in Minami Sōma, Japan in partnership with Japan Post in 2018; and demonstrated the robot for the online food ordering platform Just Eat at an innovation event held in Spain in February 2020.
