Evolved Meats (formerly Caro Meats), a Canada-based biotechnology startup, has raised CAD 2 million in seed funding (~USD 1.56 million) led by Maple Leaf Foods. Investors including Big Idea Ventures, Garage Capital, Saltagen Ventures, and strategic angel investors (names undisclosed) also participated in the round.
The funds will support product development, scaling up production, and expanding its team. The company is currently working on perfecting its tissue engineering and plans to demonstrate a prototype pork belly by the end of 2022. It also plans to work with incumbent players in the sector to develop cultivated pork products and pursue a direct-to-consumer model in the future.
Founded in 2021, Evolved Meats focuses on producing whole cuts of cultivated pork using cell sheet tissue engineering technology. Evolved Meats claims that it uses zero scaffolding to produce its whole cuts compared to other players in the market due to the company’s approach enabling animal cells to produce their own scaffolding. The company aims to provide a product that mirrors characteristics of traditional meat such as texture, marbling, taste, mouthfeel, and nutritional value.
