Dronamics, a Bulgarian cargo drone manufacturer, has obtained the “Light UAS Operator Certificate” (LUC) from the civil aviation authorities in Malta—the company's European headquarters. This allows the company to self-authorize beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flights using its “Black Swan” drone in the EU.
The LUC, available under EU drone regulations since December 2020, is recognized across all EU Aviation Safety Agency member countries and will allow Dronamics to start operations without the need to obtain permission from EU authorities.
The company aims to commence drone-based deliveries in Malta and Italy later this year, with plans to scale operations in the future.

Analyst QuickTake: The certification will build on the headstart Dronamics had, following its partnerships with German international logistics services provider Hellmann Worldwide Logistics (June 2021) and DHL (July 2021) for drone-based cross-border middle-mile delivery of time-critical items across Europe. Furthermore, Dronamics now joins the handful of peer startups to have obtained the certification to date, including Manna Drone Delivery (May 2021) and Skyports (September 2021).
