Zipline, a drone-based medical supplies delivery company, has unveiled its new Detection and Avoidance (DAA) system to enable safer autonomous flights in complex and uncontrolled airspaces. Zipline believes that the new technology will help the company realize commercial operations at scale in the US and beyond.
The system uses onboard acoustic-based technologies to navigate and provide 360-degree awareness with a range of up to 1.2 miles. Drones using the DAA system will all be able to monitor other aircrafts and change flight paths accordingly.
The required hardware has already been built into Zipline drones, with plans to activate the system upon receiving regulatory approvals from authorities in the areas in which Zipline operates.
Analyst QuickTake: Zipline is one of the most advanced startups in the drone delivery space, having conducted 320,000+ commercial deliveries to date—mostly in Africa, where its primary operations are. The unveiling of the DAA system today comes after 5+ years since launching commercial operations.
