California-based quantum software startup QC Ware has entered into a five-year collaboration with Germany-based polymer manufacturer Covestro. The partnership aims to research and develop quantum algorithms to accelerate the discovery of new materials. The terms and financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
The duo has already published two papers as part of a previous one-year proof-of-concept project on quantum-assisted industrial applications. The new partnership will focus on building algorithms that can be used in near-term functional quantum hardware—potentially with 200–500 qubits—by combining QC Ware’s quantum and classical algorithm capabilities with Covestra’s expertise in computational chemistry and materials manufacturing.
Through the partnership, Covestro will be able to enhance its processes with lower waste and energy consumption, resulting in greater quality and lower costs, whilst QC Ware will be able to sell its software applications derived from the partnership to other material manufacturers.
