Current Foods raises USD 18 million in seed funding round

Funding

  • Current Foods, a California-based producer of plant-based seafood, has raised USD 18 million in a seed funding round. Investors that participated in the round include Ray Lane of Great Point Ventures, Union Grove Venture Partners, Electric Feel Ventures, Astanor Ventures, and 12-time NBA All-Star Chris Paul.

  • The funding is expected to support Current Foods launch its smoked salmon into retail, expansion to the Japanese market, and ongoing product refinement. The company expects to achieve a significant share of the seafood market in due course.

  • Founded in 2019, Current Foods manufactures ready-to-eat plant-based tuna and salmon using bamboo, potatoes, radishes, tomatoes, algae, and peas. The startup engaged in R&D for two years before launching its first product in 2021. At the moment, its products are available through B2B from food-service locations and D2C via its own webstore.
