France to ban the use of meat-related terms for plant-based protein foods

Regulation/policy

 • France has restricted the use of sector-specific terms usually associated with animal meat–such as steak and sausage– from being used to describe plant-based meat options. According to a decree published, this ban will come into effect from October 2022 onward in an effort to avoid confusion over meat alternatives.

 • This is the first instance of an EU country implementing such a regulation. This will only be applied to meat alternatives produced within France. Imports will be given an exception as well as the term “burger,” which doesn’t have a specific reference to animal meat.

AnalystQuickTake: A similar proposal backed by farmers was initially rejected by EU lawmakers in 2020. While this regulation is a first for the EU, several US states including but not limited to Kansas , Texas , Missouri, and Arkansas have passed similar legislation backed by farmers and livestock associations. Furthermore, in June 2022, the National Chicken Council (NCC) of the US requested FDA and USDA for clearer guidance and enforcement of misleading product labels.
