Amazon Prime Air, the drone delivery arm of Amazon, has announced plans to launch a drone-based delivery service for Amazon’s customers in College Station, Texas later this year—its second location announced in the US. The company has partnered with Texas A&M University and city authorities for the project.
Once the test service is launched, Amazon’s customers in College Station will be able to have “thousands of products” delivered to their homes by drones free of charge.
Amazon Prime Air develops drones that can fly at a maximum speed of 15 mph carrying a payload of up to 5 lb, promising delivery within 30 minutes. The drones are also equipped with a sense-and-avoid system to detect and avoid other aircraft and obstacles—enabling beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations.
Analyst QuickTake: Amazon is now ramping up its drone-based delivery operations. In fact, the news comes just one month after the company announced plans to launch a similar service in Lockeford, California later this year—marking its first drone-based delivery service offered to the public in the US. Once launched, Amazon will join Google’s drone delivery arm Wing and peers DroneUp and Flytrex who have also tapped Texas for drone-based delivery operations.
