Kodiak Robotics, an autonomous truck manufacturer, has successfully completed a commercial autonomous trucking pilot between Texas, California, and Florida in partnership with 10 Roads Express, a transportation company and a USPS mail carrier. This marks the first pilot Kodiak Robotics extended to Florida.
The pilot included four commercial deliveries on a 5,600-mile round trip from San Antonio (Texas), through San Francisco (California) and Jacksonville (Florida) and back to San Antonio. However, since California does not allow autonomous commercial trucks within the state, the company’s truck had operated at SAE Level 2 autonomy (i.e., vehicles can control both the speed and the steering, but they require a safety driver to oversee the operation) for the stretch in California.
The company also noted that the pilot was run as a single event, as the company does not have the capacity to operate on a similar scale route yet. However, the two companies will further collaborate in the future to assess the possibility of integrating Kodiak Robotics’ autonomous technology into 10 Roads Express’ fleet.
