E-FISHient Protein, an Israeli cultivated seafood startup, has announced that it is working toward creating a cultivated alternative for tilapia meat by extracting a small amount of fish cells to grow fish meat in a lab.
The company is currently focusing on Nile tilapia–one of the many variations of tilapia–and is planning to eventually grow fish without the use of animal-derived serum. Furthermore, it plans to use the resultant product as raw material for fish cutlets, fish fingers, fish balls, and a fish filet.
If the serum becomes viable and successful, the company plans to sell it separately for other players in the cultivated meat sector.
E-FISHient protein was founded in 2021 as a joint venture between BioMeat Foodtech and the Volcani Institute of Israel. The company is working on developing alternative, more sustainable, and ethical means to satisfy consumer demand in a bid to mitigate ecological imbalance caused by overfishing.
