PepsiCo to expand the use of UBQ

UBQ Materials, an Israeli company that develops bio-based thermoplastic materials, has announced that PepsiCo will be expanding the use of UBQ (a bio-based thermoplastic material) across its supply chain. The latter has also launched new sustainable display stands in Europe for its chip brand “Lay’s” using UBQ. This follows the company’s successful pilot with UBQ Materials to develop bio-based pallets for its logistics centers in February 2022 .

 • The new display stands will be made using UBQ replacing fossil-fuel based plastics. In addition to this PepsiCo has also ordered 30,000 more shipping pallets made with UBQ as part of an expansion to the pilot, where it initially produced 830 pallets. These pallets will be made from UBQ thermoplastic and recycled polypropylene (PP) resin from Pepsi’s snack packaging.

 • PepsiCo has also stated that the solutions provided by UBQ Materials are an important driver for its “PepsiCo Positive” (pep+) initiative, where the company aims to reduce GHG emissions by 40% and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
