Impact Food, a California-based startup developing plant-based seafood has raised USD 500,000 at the close of its strategic angel and VC round. USD 150,000 of the total funds raised was contributed by the Ahimsa Foundation, while other backers include Future Food Fund and Serpentine Ventures.
This funding round was held in order to help tackle the collapse of wild tuna species by using a scalable food technology platform to create alternative seafood. The investment received will go toward supporting the company’s hiring and R&D efforts while it gears up for a pre-seed round of funding.
Impact Food, founded in 2021, is focused on developing plant-based seafood items that can replicate the flaky texture and the aroma of real seafood. The company does not have a marketable product as of yet but is developing Impact Tuna as its first product–with other products such as molluscs and crustaceans on the pipeline for the future–which it plans on offering to the food service industry. The company expects to develop and engage in its pilot production plans by Q4 2022.
