Boulder-based quantum hardware company ColdQuanta has secured an award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)–under its Embedded Entrepreneurship Initiative (EEI)–to accelerate the development of Coldquanta’s atomic clock technologies including sensing and quantum positioning systems (QPS). The value of the contract has not been disclosed.
The EEI, in partnership with In-Q-Tel (IQT) Emerge–an initiative to connect government agencies with promising technologies to support national security–will focus on stimulating the development of dual-use quantum technologies for the defense and commercial markets.

Analyst QUickTake: This award marks the company’s third from DARPA following a grant (amount undisclosed) awarded last year which focused on the development of a Rydberg atom-based radio frequency (RF) sensor system. Prior to that in March 2020, the company was awarded USD 7.4 million from DARPA’s Optimization with Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (ONISQ) program, to develop scalable cold-atom-based quantum systems.
