Pela, a Canadian producer of compostable accessories such as phone cases and sunglasses, has partnered with QALO, a California-based producer of silicone-based jewelry, to launch “QALO x Pela”, a line of rings made from plant-based materials that claim to be fully compostable from product to packaging.
The ring collection combines Pela’s proprietary compostable plant-based bioplastic material with QALO’s jewelry properties such as durability, flexibility, and comfort. The use of plant-based materials reportedly reduces carbon emissions by 25% and waste by 67% compared to using conventional plastics. The rings and packaging can be transformed into fertile grounds using a backyard, community, or countertop composter once it has reached the end of their useful life.
The ring collection is available to purchase at QALO’s website starting at USD 39.95.
Founded in 2007, Pela offers accessories such as phone cases, phone grips, cases for electronics, and sunglasses made from compostable materials. The company is reportedly the producer of the world’s first compostable phone. The company aims to eliminate 10 billion pounds of waste from global waste streams.
