Argo AI deploys robotaxis on Lyft’s network in Austin

Partnerships
Geographic expansion

  • Argo AI, an autonomous driving technology company backed by Ford and Volkswagen, launched a robotaxi service for the ride-hailing platform Lyft’s network in Austin, Texas. This marks Argo AI’s entry into the city, which is its second operational zone following the launch in Miami, Florida last December.

  • Lyft’s customers will now have the option to choose robotaxis via Lyft’s app for the same price as a normal Lyft ride. The robotaxis will also be accompanied by two safety drivers to take control if needed.

  • Neither party has disclosed the operating hours of the robotaxis yet, however, they will be deployed during “daytime hours.” The timeline for removing the safety driver is also not revealed yet.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Today’s launch is no surprise as Argo AI already had plans with Lyft and Ford to introduce at least 1,000 robotaxis in several cities starting with Miami and Austin. Argo AI’s rival Cruise, a General Motors subsidiary, also plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Austin later this year—which would add to the competition once live.
