Gourmey, a French startup developing lab-grown foie gras, has raised EUR 48 million (~USD 48 million) in Series A funding – the world's largest Series A round for a cultivated meat company. The round was led by Earlybird Venture Capital with the participation of Keen Venture Partners, Omnes Capital, Discovery, Thia Ventures, Fidji Simo, Heartcore Capital, Point Nine Capital, Air Street Capital, Partech, and Beyond Investing. The majority of the funding consisted of equity while a minor portion came from non-dilutive funding.
The company intends to use the funding to advance from research and development toward commercialization.
Gourmey plans on building Europe’s largest cell-cultured meat lab, a 37,000 sq foot innovation and manufacturing hub to fulfill orders at scale with 120 engineers, food experts, and operators working at the facility producing tens of thousands of pounds of cultivated meat. Further, the company is also working to gain regulatory approval in several geographies including Singapore, the UK, the US, and the EU.
