Umami Meats, a Singapore-based cultivated seafood startup, filed a patent for single-stem cell technology that uses mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) lines from fish.
According to the company, this method requires only one cell type and production line for the cultivation of muscle and fats compared to other methods which require multiple cell lines and production types.
The company has established MSC lines from three species to date, including its flagship species, the Japanese eel. Umami Meats claim this technology can lead to lower costs and high scalability thereby leading to price parity.
Analyst QuickTake: Single-cell production is becoming increasingly popular in the cultivated meat space due to the cost advantages it carries over other production methods which require microcarriers and multiple product types. In July 2022, SCiFi Foods achieved an R&D milestone in single cell-line suspension while BlueNalu, another cultivated seafood startup, announced a breakthrough with the same technology in October 2022.
