Motional, an autonomous vehicle technology company established as a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, entered into a 10-year partnership with Uber to launch robotaxi services on the latter’s platform in North America.
Motional will deploy its all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5-based autonomous vehicles (AVs) for Uber and will be available on UberX and Uber Comfort Electric in select markets. Neither party has yet disclosed the initial locations.
As a part of the deal, Uber will also provide data-driven insights to improve the efficiency and utilization of Motional’s AVs.
Analyst QuickTake: Uber has been eyeing robotaxis for a while. In 2015, the company started its own self-driving tech unit Uber ATG but sold the division to peer self-driving tech developer Aurora Innovation in late 2020, after one of Uber’s test AVs killed a pedestrian in 2018, and because the division proved to drain Uber’s money. Uber now seems to be following a more conservative approach to bringing self-driving cars into its platform—partnering with an AV developer instead of building the tech themselves. Motional has partnered with Uber since December 2021, but for autonomous last-mile deliveries to Uber Eats customers (which went live in Santa Monica, California earlier this year). Notably, today’s announcement comes on the heels of Motional launching similar robotaxi services in Las Vegas, Nevada in partnership with Uber’s rival Lyft and with transit tech provider Via.
