Amnesty International, a UK-based global movement campaigning to end human rights abuses, has initiated a campaign named “Ban the Scan” to protest against the use of facial recognition in law enforcement.
Amnesty points out such technology violates privacy and conceals assembly and public voice. It also believes that facial recognition technology has issues of racial biases.
The campaign is to begin in New York City (NYC) and would run a website gathering viewpoints of the New York public on the NYPD’s use of facial recognition. Later, Freedom of Information requests will be issued to determine the usage of the technology across NYC, pinpointing the exact locations of such cameras.
Some US cities, including Boston, San Francisco, Oakland, Jackson, Somerville, Portland (Oregon), and Portland (Maine), have already implemented bans on the use of facial recognition by police. The Minneapolis City Council also initiated a proposal last week to ban the use of facial recognition by police agencies.
