Starship Technologies, an autonomous delivery droid manufacturer, has partnered with food delivery service Grubhub to deploy delivery droids at Grubhub-serviced college campuses across the US.
The duo currently offers the service at the University of Kentucky, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), Wayne State University, Southern Methodist University, and Fairfield University, with plans to expand reach to more college campuses by the end of the year.
Grubhub currently serves 250+ college campuses in the US, giving students the ability to integrate meal plans to their Grubhub account and order food from both on- and off-campus eateries for delivery and pickup.
Analyst QuickTake: Tapping universities has been a common strategy among droid developers. For example, Starship alone serves 25+ universities today, while rival Kiwibots’ droids move around at around 20 such locations, with plans to bring it to 50+ locations throughout the year. This is not the first time Grubhub tried autonomous food delivery droids on campuses either. In fact, the company also partnered with Starship’s rival Cartken this June for droid-based deliveries at US college campuses, after ending its deal with Russian incumbent and droid maker Yandex earlier this year citing economic sanctions imposed on Russia following conflicts with Ukraine.
