Grubhub has partnered with Starship technologies, an Estonian developer of autonomous delivery droids, to provide robot delivery services on college campuses across the US.
The two companies have already launched robotic delivery services at five universities (the University of Kentucky, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), Wayne State University, Southern Methodist University, and Fairfield University) with plans to expand the service to more college campuses within the year. Over 170,000 students across the campuses will have access to robotic delivery services through this initiative.
The delivery bots can travel up to 4 mph, carry the equivalent of three bags of groceries, and operate in various weather conditions including rain and snow.
Grubhub has partnerships with more than 250 college campuses across the US which will be strengthened by its partnership with Starship which has a fleet of over 2,000 robots serving over 25 schools across the US.
Analyst QuickTake : This initiative follows Grubhub’s partnership with Cartken to introduce delivery bots to college campuses after ending its deal with Russian technology company Yandex earlier this year , citing economic sanctions imposed on Russia following conflicts with Ukraine. Grubhub and Cartken launched the technology as a pilot at the Ohio State University in April this year. Meanwhile Uber also has multiple food delivery partnerships with autonomous delivery solution providers such as Serve Robotics, Motional , and Nuro .
