Miovision acquires Rapid Flow Technologies

M&A

  • Miovision, a Canadian traffic flow management solution provider, announced that it has acquired long-time partner Rapid Flow Technologies, the developer of “Surtrac,” one of the early smart traffic signal control systems, for an undisclosed amount.

  • Surtac was developed in 2010 by Carnegie Mellon University’s Traffic21 Institute and employs AI to coordinate traffic lights based on traffic conditions to improve flows. It offers two main solutions, that is 1) “Surtrac,” an AI-powered solution to coordinate traffic lights based on traffic conditions to improve flows and 2) “Routecast,” which allows multi-modal travelers, including pedestrians, to share their route information in real time with Surtrac via mobile phone or connected vehicle technologies.

  • The acquisition allows Miovision to add Rapid Flow Technology’s proprietary solution to its platform. It will also acquire the team, including Greg Barlow, co-founder and co-inventor of Surtrac. Additionally, Miovision plans to use Rapid Flow Technologies’ Pittsburgh location as its fifth global office.

  • The company also reported that Rapid Flow’s Surtrac adaptive traffic signal control was deployed across 350 intersections, including installations integrated with Miovision TrafficLink in Peterborough, Ontario, and Quincy, Massachusetts.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Through this acquisition, Canadian-based Miovision gains access to more than 20 cities and municipalities in the US and Canada, deepening its coverage in North America. As a pioneer in smart traffic flow systems, Miovision is likely to leverage Rapid Flow’s experience to further deepen its product offerings.
