Solar Foods, a Finnish plant-based startup that develops Solein protein–a single-cell protein made using microbes cultured in carbon dioxide and electricity–has received regulatory approval from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) just one year after having filed its novel food dossier with the SFA.
The regulatory approval will enable the company to sell products containing Solein in Singapore. Further, the company plans to seek Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in the USA and has filed for novel food authorization in the UK and the EU.
Although regulatory approval is in place, the company’s first products are not expected to hit the market until 2024 due to a lack of production capacity which is currently at less than 5kg per week. Development of Solar Foods’ first commercial factory is underway–having broken ground in Q4 2021– and is slated to begin operations in 2024.
