Renewable Iron Fuel Technology (RIFT), a Netherlands-based company developing iron fuel as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, has raised EUR 2 million (~USD 1.9 million) in its first funding round led by Rubio Impact Ventures. Other investors included Breakthrough Energy, Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij, and Energietransitiefonds Rotterdam (InnovationQuarter).
The company plans to use these funds to further develop its current test systems at Ennatuurlijk, Veolia Nederland, and Kleefse Waard industrial park and grow its team in order to save 1 gigatonne of CO2 per year by 2050.
Founded in 2021, RIFT developed technology for heat to be produced using iron powder. This circular fuel is an environmentally friendly substitute for fossil fuels as the company’s technology repeatedly produces heat when the iron powder is burnt and then converts the remaining iron-oxide back into iron fuel and repeats the process over and over again. RIFT is also developing industrial-scale boilers to replace gas-fueled boilers and reduce annual CO2 emissions.
