Universal Quantum secures EUR 67 million DLR contract

Funding

  • UK-based quantum hardware startup Universal Quantum–via its German subsidiary–has secured a EUR 67 million (USD 65 million) contract from the German Aerospace Center (DLR), to build a fully scalable trapped-ion quantum computer.

  • The funding will be injected into two sub-projects: 1) a single-chip quantum computer and 2) a multi-chip computer connected to each other with around 100 qubits as a starting point. The chip is being developed with the aim of being the world’s most powerful chip for a fully scalable trapped-ion quantum.

  • The four-year project is a part of the German government’s Quantum Computing Initiative which awarded five projects to startups last week, based on trapped-ion quantum computers totaling EUR 208 million (USD 203 million).
