Nuro, an autonomous delivery vehicle (ADV) developer, is laying off around 300 employees (roughly 20% of its workforce) citing unfavorable economic conditions and the need to extend its cash runway into 2025.
Since Nuro’s last USD 600 million fundraise a year ago, the company has been expanding its team rapidly and increasing its operating expenses, reportedly assuming that the funding environment would remain strong. The company now notes that has been a mistake amid the macroeconomic challenges the companies are facing this year.
The company will offer severance pay, bonuses, and other benefits for laid-off employees.
Analyst QuickTake: This marks the second time Nuro announced layoffs for this year. In June, the company laid off 10+ employees as it closed four of its locations in Houston, and three in Mountain View, and shifted its focus to primary teleoperations in Arizona, which also resulted in the closure of its operations at the Phoenix Depot.
