SAVRpak, a California-based developer of a peel-and-stick patch that can be inserted in food containers to prevent food from spoiling, partnered with Jüsto, a Mexico-based online delivery-only grocery store chain, to extend the shelf life of berries by integrating SAVRpak’s packaging, which includes a small thermodynamic pouch that instantly removes condensation, to each clamshell of berries ordered through Jüsto.
Built of FDA-approved materials, SAVpak’s packaging consists of a moisture control technology—Atmospheric Control and Transmission (ACT) technology—which removes 50% of condensation within seconds and then prevents it from forming by absorbing the moisture that leads to sogginess and harmful microbial bacteria that causes produce to spoil. This technology is said to extend the shelf-life of produce up to three times.
Analyst QuickTake: SAVRpak also partnered with various global product suppliers including Sysco and claims to keep perishables up to 4 times longer. For fruits like berries, the company’s preliminary trials have proved to extend the shelf-life of raspberries by 4–5+ days and strawberries by 4+ days. The company also hinted that it is looking at other pilots and trials across farms as well as grocers in the US and Canada.
