Infarm to downsize operations; plans to lay off over half of its workforce

Industry news

  • Infarm, a Berlin-based hydroponic vertical farming system startup offering herbs and green leaves, announced plans to downsize its operations and layoff up to 500 employees from the company.

  • According to an email sent by the CEO and CTO of Infarm, the company plans to become more profitable and is adjusting its growth strategy and targets amidst rising energy costs in Europe, tough financial markets, and the challenging global business environment. The management put forward a revised plan to achieve its targets which includes 

    • Consolidating farming capacity across Growing Centers in Germany, Denmark, and Canada, and opening a new Growing center in Maryland .

    • Downsizing operations in the UK, France, and the Netherlands

    • Reducing production costs via its high-yield industrial-scale farming units (ACREs) and relocating modular ACRE farming units to the core markets.

  • Analyst QuickTake : Infarm previously announced that it is laying off 5% of its employees in September 2022.   At the time, the company had over 1,000 employees across Europe, Japan, Canada, and the US.
