Motional cuts down workforce to reallocate resources

Management news

  • Motional, an autonomous vehicle technology company established as a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, laid off an undisclosed number of employees citing the need to reallocate resources to meet long-term commercial success.

  • The company has not provided any reason for the reallocation of resources but has mentioned its plans to continue hiring to develop its technology further and meet commitments to its partners.

  • As per sources, layoffs have affected dozens of employees (out of its current 1,500+ global headcount) across its operations.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Layoffs and shutdowns have been a common scene in the autonomous vehicle space this year. For example, Ford and VW-backed autonomous tech development unit Argo AI was closed down in October; autonomous last-mile delivery vehicle developer Nuro laid off 20% of its workforce in November , and autonomous vehicle startup Pony.ai announced an organizational restructuring in November that led to layoffs in China. Aurora Innovation, another autonomous vehicle startup, is also reportedly considering strategic actions , including the sale of the company, amid worsening market conditions.
