Cruise introduces robotaxi services in Austin and Phoenix

Geographic expansion

  • General Motors (GM)’s autonomous vehicle tech development unit Cruise has introduced its fully autonomous robotaxi services (i.e., without a safety driver) in Austin, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona for selected paying customers–in line with its plans announced in September.

  • The service is now available for friends and family members of Cruise employees with plans to launch the service for the general public in the future. The company opened the robotaxi waitlist to the public in October and is reportedly planning to start offering the service once it has adequate vehicles to meet the demand.

  • Operations in Austin will initially be limited to downtown and central Austin, Wednesday to Sunday from 10 pm to 5 pm. Meanwhile, its operations in Phoenix will initially start in Chandler, throughout the weekdays from 7 pm to 2 am.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Cruise’s latest expansion to Phoenix and Austin now adds to the company’s existing commercial robotaxi services in San Francisco, California which began in June. The new cities–especially Phoenix–are also among the popular destinations for autonomous vehicle deployment–now adding Cruise to the competition. In fact, Google’s self-driving tech unit Waymo has been operating commercial robotaxi services in Phoenix since 2018.
