Steakholder Foods, an Israeli producer of cultivated meats, received a grant of up to USD 1 million funded by the Singapore Israel Industrial R&D Foundation (SIIRD)–-a cooperation between Enterprise Singapore (ESG) and the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA).
Marking the first grant of its kind for the company, it will be used towards the development of 3D-printed structured eel and grouper products in collaboration with Singaporean cultivated seafood company, Umami Meats. The products will be printed using Steakholder Foods’ proprietary 3D printing technology with customized bio-inks for Umami Meats’ cells.
Through the collaboration, the company aims to develop a scalable process for the production of cultivated fish leveraging its newly developed technology for mimicking the flaky texture of cooked fish, with the project’s first prototype—a hybrid grouper product—-slated to be ready by Q1 2023.
Analyst QuickTake: This collaboration marks a great opportunity for both parties involved. While Umami Meats is able to access the proprietary technology of one of the leading players in the cultivated meat industry, Steakholder Foods gets access to the Singaporean market which is still the only country with approval for the sale of cultivated meats.
