Multus Media, a UK-based cell-cultured startup developing growth media, has raised GBP 7.9 million (~USD 9.6 million) in a funding round led by Mandi Ventures with participation from SOSV, Big Idea Ventures, SynBioVen, and Asahi Kasei. Additionally, the company received GBP 2.15 million (~USD 2.6 million) from Innovate UK through the EIC accelerator.
The funding is expected to support the development of a production plant in London–which the company claims is first-of-its-kind–that will produce food-safe and animal-free growth media for the cell-cultured meat industry. The facility is slated to begin operations towards the latter end of 2023.
Earlier this month, the company achieved a significant milestone when it obtained ISO 22000 certification, which ensures that Multus’ ingredients and formulations, growth factors, attachment molecules, and serum replacements are produced according to food-safety standards. This is an essential development as the company gears up for its new facility.
