Divert plans to construct a food recovery facility in west Turlock

  • Divert, a Massachusetts-based technology company focused on food-waste reduction, has planned to construct a 71,000 sq ft food recovery facility in west Turlock that is slated to open by early 2024.

  • The facility would convert unsold food material from local grocery stores and other food retailers into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) to meet utility company standards. Divert and PG&E, a company providing natural gas and electric services, agreed to bring the processed RNG to PG&E's on-site transmission line, replacing fossil-fuel gas with a carbon-negative renewable fuel to supply homes and businesses.

  • The company claims that the Turlock facility will assist its customers in meeting organic waste requirements under SB 1383 (a statewide effort to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants in various sectors of California, including the food and retail industry).

  • The company also intends to expand its retail presence with national and regional grocers and is likely to broaden its focus to other industries, such as restaurants.
