Nikola Motor Company (Nikola), developer of heavy-duty battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) trucks, announced the launch of heavy-duty, 700 bar (10,000 psi) hydrogen mobile fueling stations which can be directly used to fuel FCEVs back-to-back.
The company will convert its tube trailers, which have the capacity to carry 960 kg (2,110+ lbs) of hydrogen, into these mobile hydrogen-refueling stations. One fueler will be able to refuel nine Nikola trucks. The mobile fueler program will include its own fuelers and several third-party solutions.
The first unit has been completed and released for market operation, with additional hydrogen mobile fuelers to be launched in Q1 2023. The units will complement Nikola’s permanent hydrogen fueling stations, which are currently being developed.
Analyst QuickTake: Fueling infrastructure worldwide is still in its nascent stage in supporting hydrogen truck fleets; hence, FCEV manufacturers invest in these facilities to fuel the demand for vehicles. In fact, FCEV truck manufacturers including Nikola, Hyzon Motors, and Tevva have partnered with renewable natural gas and fueling infrastructure providers to establish hydrogen fueling stations and strengthen their hydrogen ecosystem.
