Amazon closes its Just Walk Out-powered Store in Dalston; announces plans to open two new Amazon Fresh stores in London

Industry news

  • Amazon has announced plans to permanently close its Just Walk Out-powered Amazon Fresh Store in Dalston, northeast London. The closure was announced just 18 months after its launch.

  • Regardless, Amazon remains committed to the Amazon Fresh UK physical store format and has announced plans to launch two Amazon Fresh locations in the Greater London area. It further stated that the company regularly reviews its business from time to time to make changes and ensure the best service to its customers.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Amazon launched its checkout-free format in the UK in March 2021 before rapidly expanding its presence to 18 stores. However, the company slowed down its expansion toward the end of 2022; according to a report by The Sunday Times, Amazon gradually moved away from the on-site approach and stopped its search for more locations.
